‘Responsible’ Capitalism

20 January 2012

As Britain enters 2012 the political debate seems dominated by questions surrounding the need for a more ‘responsible’ capitalism. The last week has seen all three main party leaders vie to seize the initiative – and historical prescience.

Drawing on nineteenth century liberalism, Nick Clegg has called for a ‘dynamic’ and ‘savvy’ approach that emulates the ‘John Lewis model’ of employee ownership. David Cameron invoked social responsibility, ownership and innovation: attempting to tie ‘caring capitalism’ into the Big Society. And, Ed Miliband claimed that the entire debate was validation of his 2011 Labour Party Conference Speech.

All of this raises two obvious questions. Who’s right? And, do any of the parties’ histories provide a model that can be applied today?

Keep posted to find out!
